Gibson Custom's General Manager Rick Gembar stated, "We
wanted to make sure to capture the last Les Paul made here
in 1999 and the first one made in 2000. When we discussed
this, the idea came out to include a tribute guitar as a centerpiece
of these two milestone guitars. Bruce Kunkel, our resident
artist and one of our Master Luthiers, suggested he create
a tribute to the 1900s, similar to those he has done with
famous guitarists as the central figure."
Kunkel and Gembar poured over countless books, websites and
any source of information that would help define the Deco
era and help conceptualize it for recreation on the guitars.
The Jazz Moderne celebrates the simple geometry and infatuation
with emerging materials that dominated in the period between
the Roaring Twenties and the end of the Great Depression.
This period was one of the most influential eras of design
that touched an unprecedented range of interests including
Hollywood films, everyday products as well as art.
